Grant Writing for Conservators and Conservation Projects

Finding financial sponsorship and preparing funding applications are important skills for conservators, but the process can be daunting for those who do not do it frequently. In this workshop, experienced grant-writers from cultural institutions in Southeast Michigan will share their tips on the following:

  • Finding funding opportunities

  • Matching conservation and collections care projects to federal grant programs

  • Structuring and writing a compelling narrative

  • Developing work plans and budgets

  • Fundraising for individual professional development and research

Panelists

Darlene Nichols is the University of Michigan Library’s subject specialist in the area of grant-seeking and philanthropy. She is responsible for collection development in the areas of grant-seeking, proposal writing, and philanthropy, and provides research consultation to faculty, students and the local non-profit community. She also has experience evaluating experience grants submitted to the federal government's Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Paul Conway is associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, where he teaches courses on digitization, preservation, archives, and the ethics of new technologies. He has made major contributions over the past 30 years to the literature on archival users and use, preservation management, and digital imaging technologies. He has extensive administrative experience in the cultural heritage sector, including grant writing and review.

Jim McCabe is a collections manager and the curator of buildings at The Henry Ford. He has extensive experience writing and reviewing federal grant applications for collections-based projects.

Suzanne Davis is a conservator at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. She has experience writing and reviewing applications for federal and non-federal sponsors, including the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation.
